Available since 2002, NuvaRing prevents pregnancy by releasing low doses of estrogen and progestin near the cervix. NuvaRing is placed inside the vagina and worn for one week. Then a new one is placed every three weeks, with nothing used the fourth week.
When used as intended, NuvaRing is 98-99% effective at preventing pregnancy. This success rate is comparable to the birth control pill.
At least 50 women disagree, however, as to the safety of this device, and have filed defective drug lawsuits against Organon USA and its subsidiaries. These lawsuits claim that NuvaRing caused blood clot complications resulting in amputations, pulmonary embolisms, and death.
